NAIROBI, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's diplomatic clout will re-energize the push for a total ban on ivory trade during the upcoming Convention on International Trade on Endangered Species (CITES), Kenyan officials said on Monday.

Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources Judi Wakhungu said Kenya is counting on China to back its push for a total ban on ivory trade at the CITES meeting to be held in Johannesburg from Sept. 24 to Oct. 5.

Kenya has developed fourteen proposals that call for concerted efforts to protect rare flora and fauna from extinction linked to human actions and climate shocks.

According to Wakhungu, Kenya will lobby the international community to lift the status of African elephant from Appendix two to one, given the grave threats facing the giant mammals.

"A coalition of 28 African elephant range states has supported our proposal calling for renowned attention to the dire plight of these mammals linked to poaching," said Wakhungu.

"The presidents of China and the United States last year made a commitment to promote wildlife protection in Africa. We are hopeful this gesture will inject fresh impetus in the push for total ban on ivory trade in both domestic and overseas markets," Wakhungu said.

She added that the torching of 105 tonnes of elephant tusks and 1.03 tonnes of rhino horns by President Uhuru Kenyatta on April 30th this year reaffirmed Kenya's uncompromising stand against illegal trade in wildlife products.

Margaret Mwakima, principal secretary in the state department of natural resources, said poaching in Kenya has declined by 90 percent in the last two years thanks to support from bilateral allies such as China.

NAIROBI , Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- An autopsy conducted on the body of the slain Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ICT Manager Chris Msando revealed Wednesday that he was tortured and then strangled to death.

The exercise conducted on his body indicated his killers may have used bare hands in the strangulation and also hit him with a blunt object in the head inflicting a deep cut.

According to Government Chief Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor and family one Dr Bessie Byakika, Msando's back had deep scratches, indicating the body was either dragged on a rough surface or scratched.

His right hand had deep cuts giving an indication of severe torture using a very sharp object. "He was strangled. Strangulation was the cause of the death ," said Oduor, adding that Msando had a collapsed trachea, giving an indication the killers used bare hands , he added.

Msando was a key official at Kenya's electoral commission. He was one of a handful of officials who had the electoral commission's computer system passwords and knew the exact location of the servers to run the election.

Msando's death was confirmed less than an hour before he was scheduled to oversee the test run of the live results transmission system in Nairobi on Monday.

The autopsy report now forms the basis of the probe into the murder that happened hours after Msando was abducted.

His body alongside that of a 21-year-old nutrition student was found dumped in a forest in the outskirts of Nairobi on Saturday.

Investigators said they are talking to at least three suspects in connection with the murder. It is not clear what role the suspects played in the murder of the two.

They said they had covered much of the ground and now with the results of the postmortem out, they want to get the real killers and motive.

WINDHOEK, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Standard Bank Namibia , one of the southern African country's oldest banking institutions, says its relationship with Chinese companies and business people has grown from strength to strength.

The relationship started in earnest in Feb. 2015 when the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Limited (ICBC) acquired shares in Standard Bank's London-based Global Markets business.

The acquisition allowed both ICBC and Standard Bank to create a platform to serve the growing demands of Chinese clients for global commodities, fixed income , currency and equities products while continuing as a distribution platform for African risk.

This union also allows for the Chinese community to transact in renminbi, which has vast benefits such as realising significant savings when U.S. dollar conversion costs and liquidity constraints are removed; promotes price transparency and reduces the cost of international trade; to name a few.

The renminbi cash exchange solution at Standard Bank Namibia's Windhoek branch was officially launched on Jan. 21, 2016.

Following its inclusion in the International Monetary Fund's Special Drawing Right basket of currencies , China's renminbi currency has became widely accepted for global trade.

Standard Bank Namibia's chief executive officer Vetumbuavi Mungunda said in a statement Wednesday that he was proud that Standard Bank is at the centre of Chinese business, investments and projects in Namibia.

According to Mungunda, this was because Standard Bank Namibia understands and responds to the needs and requirements of Chinese people in the country.

Mungunda wishes that the great symbiotic relationship should grow not only in Namibia but across the continent as a whole for a long time to come.

The Chinese business community in Namibia , he added, has contributed vastly to the socio-ec.
